Parents want Findley’s The Wars banned from school

Several parents want an award-winning novel they say is filled with violent, exploitive sexual references removed from Bluewater classrooms.

Timothy Findley’s The Wars, which won the Governor General’s Award for fiction in 1977, is “filled with adult content,” Tiverton parent Carolyn Waddell told trustees.

“The book includes a number of very explicit and detailed descriptions of sexual encounters, most of them exploitive and violent,” Waddell said.

Appeals court: N.Y. school can censor cartoon in ‘forum’ and independent newspapers

Even a student newspaper that is a “limited public forum” can be censored under Hazelwood, a federal appeals court ruled Wednesday.

Advocates called it the most damaging decision to high school student journalism in the past 20 years.

‘Sexy’ Children’s Book Pulled from Library Shelves

A valley mom who pushed to have a book banned from her daughter’s school library has succeeded. Hilary Lockhart says the book ‘Lovingly Alice’ contains graphic details about sex and shouldn’t be available to kids.

Lockhart, the mother of an 8-year-old from Quayle Run Elementary, was shocked when she flipped through the pages of Lovingly Alice.

“As I flipped through, I’m in shock. I was like, I have to go talk to your principal about this,” she says.

Colleges Say They Didn’t Delete Online Material on Planned Parenthood

The Cardinal Newman Society, a conservative Roman Catholic organization, said on Monday that two dozen Catholic colleges had removed mentions of Planned Parenthood from their Web sites after facing criticism over the material.

But while several colleges acknowledged deleting material, officials at five colleges on the group’s list denied removing any mention of the reproductive-rights organization. And many of the Web pages that the colleges supposedly modified still mention Planned Parenthood.
